Sam was the first of the boys on the reservation to turn into a werewolf. As each boy began to phase Sam was the one to guide them through the change explain to them what was going on. He took on the roll of alpha easily. He was the one that informed Bella that the Cullens weren't welcome in La Push and the one that told Jacob, after he changed, that he could not tell Bella.

Sam is currently engaged to Emily Young, but his first love was her cousin, Leah Clearwater. Leah and Sam dated through high school. The duo cared about each other very much, even when Sam couldn't tell Leah about his phasing. The relationship between the two came to an abrupt halt when Leah had Emily over to visit and Sam imprinted on her.

Some point during Sam and Emily's relationship Sam lost control and phased too close to her. He hurt her badly, leaving scars down the side of her face and arm. Sam has never forgiven himself for his carelessness, but loves Emily unconditionally.

Long, pale fingers quickly turned each page of a book haphazardly set on her lap. A new book had come in the mail today. Another one about architecture that would join the many others Esme had collected over the years. Beside the ones of architecture would be the ones about antique restoration. Both were hobbies of Esme, something she enjoyed doing in her free time. It was no secret in the family. She had designed this home with the help of her family, of course, and restored many of the old pieces of furniture in the home.
