Esme was originally from Columbus, Ohio. She was born in 1895, and changed in 1921 when she was 26 years old. When human she had been married to an abusive husband, Charles Evenson. It was a godsend when he was drafted into the first World War. But, he did return, and life for Esme was a nightmare once again. Shortly after he returned she discovered she was pregnant. An abusive situation was no place for a baby and the pregnancy was her catalyst to escape the abusive hand of her husband. She ran away to Milwaukee in 1920.

She gave birth to a baby boy in 1921, but lost him days later due to a lung infection. Heartbroken, losing her entire world with the passing of her darling baby, she attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff. The extent of her injuries was so severe that she was wheeled directly into the morgue. It was there in that hospital that she came across Carlisle Cullen. A man she had met many years before when she was 16 and had been treated for a broken leg in a different hospital. Dr. Cullen, unwilling to let the happy girl he remembered die, changed her.

He felt her warm, soft hands on his face and he opened his eyes to meet hers. Brown and blue, he could get used to the contrast between the deep, dark, comforting feel of her eyes against his bright, soft, vibrant feel of his. The difference between their appearance wasn't the only thing, they were nearly opposite in most aspects, but that's what seemingly held them together. Though they were completely different, they complimented each other well and rarely argued or disagreed with the other. Mike realized how ridiculous his previous thoughts had been, listening to how she scolded him now and recalling how she had willingly and enthusiastically went with his movements rather than against them.

Another burst of quiet laughter broke free from his throat at the realization that he hadn't forced Amber into anything, that she was willing the entire time.
